I would be grateful for any information relating to the approved
way of referring to articles or references taken from the www.

Janet and Y'all:
I am enclosing a header of an article I just downloaded from A.O.L. on
how to cite references. The Classroom Connect newsletter added on a
fairly touchy disclaimer about copying, even excerpts, so get the info
directly from them per the address below.

You have asked a good question.
We have asked that same question here of many and have
been unable to reach any consensus.
Just came across in the May 1996 issue of Hospital Pharmacy,
volume 6; page 508 where for the first time I have seen reference
made to source from the www.
Verbatim as follows, it reads:
"25. Anonymous. Thalidomide: A simple fact sheet from The
Network. WWW.aid-snyc.org/network/The Network 1995;
10 May 1995."
Probably an inquiry to the editor of the journal or publisher of the
publication you plan to submit a manuscript with a WWW citation to
would be the best answer for now. Wonder how journal reviewers will
treat citations of WWW since the materials are subject to updating,
deletion and questions of authenicity (authorship, etc).

Your local library may have a copy of "MLA Handbook
for Writers of Research Papers" fourth edition, by Joseph
Gibaldi. It is publishered by The Modern Language
Assoc. of America, N.Y.
It has on page 176 how to cite a letter, memo, Email,
or a public online posting as well as other electronic
media.
