We are in the process of remodeling our Pharmacy Practice lab. I am curious
as to what other Colleges/schools are using for pharmacy software especially
programs that incorporate dispensing and pharmaceutical care/disease state
management.
Thank you.

I am not a pharmacy school but I do have a suggestion. You should look into
home infusion pharmacy packages. Even though most pharmacists will not be
going into this field, care planning processes are built into many of these
packages.

We have developed our own software. We are adding pharmaceutical care
parts to the dispensing and profile parts of our program. The program lets
you build your own profiles for the students and then will build similiar
profiles for the other students.
We have seen two major problems with commercial software. If you want to
prebuild profiles, you have to manually enter each patient and their
respective prescriptions. Second, the training time for some of the
programs is a minimum of a couple of weeks of your lab course.

Dear Gary,
In response to your PharmMM inquiry about software, if your interest
includes pharmacokinetics software, several pharmacy and medical schools
around the world now use PK Solutions as the teaching/research software of
choice.
The annoucement below provides an overview of PK Solutions. You can also
download a demo and get additional details from our web site at:
http://www.bright.net/~dfarrier
A new TDM package should also be available from Summit in the near future.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thank you for your inquiry.
We supply a Touch Screen Information Kiosk. To date there are over 1,000
pharmacies using the Kiosk throughout Australia, New Zealand and PNG. The
Kiosk provides over 2,000 topics of health related information that you can
give to your customers. It is an aid for patient counselling, it increases
staff knowledge of health issues and at the same time generates extra sales
throughout your shop simply by using the printout. The printout suggests
generic products for each health issue.
The software covers all areas of health including Ailments, Diets, Herbs,
Vitamins, Cosmetics, Child Care, Pregnancy, Sport, Post Operative Care, and
more.
The Kiosk will benefit you, your staff and most importantly your customers.
If you would like more information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Gary,
I am very impressed and pleased with the P.R.O.S. software. If you are not
familiar with it, I can give you some info. It has many facets and because
of that, I think it is more versatile than some of the other pieces with
which I am familiar.
Another exceptionally good reference is "Clinical Pharmacology" by Gold
Standard Multimedia. Sometimes I like to just stroll through the screens.
It is well presented and is so easy to use that it can be learned
intuitively. I have information on that piece also.

Gary,
We use the Rx30 pharmacy dispensing software which is OBRA compatible
[performs ProDUR and has a Pharmacist Intervention/Claim Form]. Other
than that we have no specific disease management software [would be
nice]. We model "clinics" such as pain, lipid, diabetes,
hypertension/cardiovascular risk,
anticoagulation, vaccinations, etc. manually. Please let us know if you find
something interesting! Regards, Delwar

The software programs which manage patient medical information are
available, but the best ones are not well suited for a lab setting. (Cost,
computer requirements, maintenance, training).
You have a few options for the meantime: 1. Paper records. 2. Many
"pharmaceutical care" software vendors offer a school package - which
promotes their software. They may offer it for free or very low cost,
depending on what is involved, as long as it is not used on a commercial
basis (no "real" patients). A list of just a few vendors to contact:
Etreby: www.etreby.com
JAScorp: www.jascorp.com
QS/1: www.qs1.com
The industry magazine: Computertalk, at www.computertalk.com has an annual
"buying guide" for most of the commercially available systems. This would
be a place to look at - you might request a demo of the software you are
interested in, and let the students and faculty determine how "intuitive" it
is to learn.
To bring the whole package together in this era - you also might contact a
PBM for simulating the frustrations of online claims adjudication - for
dispensing, cognitive services, home medical equipment, lab tests, etc.
