I am a second year graduate student at Virginia Commonwealth University
in Richmond, Virginia conducting interdisciplinary research into the
structure-activity relationships and forensic identification of the
classical hallucinogens (phenethylamines, indolealklyamines including
beta-carbolines, and lysergamides)in collaboration with Dr. Richard A.
Glennon, Ph. D. at the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy.
I have successfully conducted a thorough literature search focused on
the medicinal chemistry of these agents. At this time, I am very
interested in locating sources of information covering the forensic
identification of these compounds. Specifically, I am seeking data on
presumptive color tests (spot tests), TLC, GC, GC-MS, FTIR, GC-FTIR,
HPLC, HPLC-MS, NMR, capillary electrophoresis and any other accepted
analytical method for forensic analysis and identification.
Furthermore, I have ready access to published reference texts such as
Mills "IDDA," Clarke's, and "Analysis of Drugs of Abuse by Gough," as
well as references from the primary literature dating from the early
1970's. These references include some data on the more commonly
encountered agents (i. e., MDA, MDEA, MDMA, DMT, etc.) but I am also
intent on locating data on less commonly encountered or novel compounds
which may never have been synthesized extensively and subsequently not
seized in large quantity. Furthermore, many forensic science agencies
at all levels do not publish these data after performing the analyses
and identification of the compound.
I have been in contact with UK academia and the British Forensic Science
Service, and have requested some general information from the DEA. I
would be grateful to learn of individual scientists who have worked in
this area or who have knowledge of potential sources of data and
information, or who can refer me to a learned colleague.
Thanks very much.
Regards,
Philip E. M. Crooker
