advantages and disadvantages of using a water based medium as opposed to an
alcohol based medium. Which safety precautions, if any should be taken
during granulation?
Why are tablets coated? What are the diff between sugar, film and

Mr. Rudolph:
All your questions will be satisfactorily answered by reference to standard
undergraduate pharmaceutical sciences textbooks, e.g. (1) Lachman,
Lieberman and Kanig, Theory and Practice of Industrial Pharmacy, 3rd Ed.,
Lea and Febiger; or (2) Genarro et al, eds, Remington's Pharmaceutical
Sciences, Mack Publishing.
The only costs to your company will be in the provision of adequate
information resources.
Regards
Richard

You should granulate the mixed powder to have an adequate small volume to be
compressed in one tablet , and the flowing of the same sized granules to one
hole is considered more steady and smoothly than the fine powder .
>Describe the characteristics of an ideal granulate.
I think the ideal granule is same size particles , self-contained binding
exp , and less of humidity.

an

I think water based medium is a classic way , cheap and easy to manipulate ,
but might have and chemistry reaction in side the ingredients together , ie
citric acid and soda.
An alcohol residue might cause a bitter taste.

I will try to disscuss in next mail .
I live in a poor and under progressive country , so I hadn't much of hi-tech
exp to use in making tablets, then I still have some experiences in fact
everyday with old excipient such as starch , talcum and hand made
granulators.

Dear Dain,
Sorry I have not replied earlier,
All your answers will be in Lachman Liebermann & Kanig, Bentley ed Rawlins
and Aulton Pharmaceutics 1988. In due course when I have finished my finals,
I will send you my introduction to my project which I hope you will find
useful, although it is about granulation per se & not about tablet
compression & coating.
Yours Paul Gadsden IIIrd year final pharmacy student University of Brighton
