Slide 16 Slide showing blood sugar levels after tolbutamide acid and salt (redrawn from Wagner, J.G. 1961 Biopharmaceutics: absorption aspects, J. Pharm. Sci., 50, 359. Rapid dissolution and absorption is not always the objective. Sometimes a slower release is required. In the case of tolbutamide, used to lower blood sugar concentrations, a more sustained release is better causing a more gradual reduction in blood sugar.
